Ever wondered what’s causing constipation in your body? And what that might look like beyond the bathroom? The truth is, many of us overlook the deeper issues behind this daily struggle. Let’s explore the most common reasons of constipation and how it affects your health from the inside out.
Constipation Is a Bigger Deal Than You Think
“I’m a high-efficiency human being. I don’t need to poop every day.”
Well, I don’t care how efficient you are, your body doesn’t run well on garbage. If you’re not eliminating regularly, that waste builds up. And yes, severe constipation causes more than just discomfort. It can set the stage for long-term health problems.
What Happens Inside Your Gut
Let’s start with the gut, since that’s where most people assume constipation begins (and ends).
Constipation can enlarge the colon and create pockets. Hello, diverticulitis. It also increases the risk of Crohn’s, polyps, and even cancer.
Here’s what happens: normally, the colon is evenly shaped. But with chronic constipation, it stretches in sections, creating pockets where waste gets stuck. Instead of food moving smoothly through the gut, it has to push past rigid, bumpy walls. That leads to slower digestion, discomfort, and more serious issues over time.
When Things Get Backed Up
One key issue is the ileocecal valve, which connects your small and large intestine. When waste backs up, this valve doesn’t close properly. Food begins to move in the wrong direction, confusing your digestion. Over time, this disrupts the digestive process higher up, affecting gallbladder function and even your stomach. The result?
- Heartburn
- Inflammation
- sometimes Hiatal hernias
The Ripple Effect of Constipation on Your Whole Body
Constipation isn’t just a gut problem, it’s a whole-body problem. When toxins sit in your colon too long, they get reabsorbed into your bloodstream.
Autoimmune disorders like psoriasis, rheumatoid arthritis, eczema, and lupus are all aggravated by that extra toxicity. This is a key reason constipation can make chronic conditions harder to manage.
How Many Bowel Movements Should You Have?
Ideally, two per day. Once in a while, one is okay. But less than that? It’s a sign your body isn’t eliminating properly. More than three a day might indicate diarrhea, which brings its own issues like poor nutrient absorption and disrupted gut flora.
Even worse? Some people have diarrhea and still have old, compacted waste stuck in the gut lining. So just because you’re going, doesn’t mean you’re cleared out.
Liver Load & Joint Pain: The Hidden Connection
Your liver is your body’s detox superhero, but when you’re constipated, toxins meant to leave the body get reabsorbed and dumped back into your liver. That creates a vicious cycle.
And here’s the surprise: this can lead to joint pain. Why? Because your liver uses sulfur to process toxins. When it’s constantly overworked, it uses up the sulfur your joints need to stay strong. I’ve seen clients’ joint pain disappear in a month once we supported their liver and got their bowels moving.
Where Can Constipation Cause Pain?
It’s not just your belly. Constipation pain often shows up in the lower abdomen, pelvis, lower back, and even in your joints due to the toxic overload. That bloated, tight, uncomfortable feeling? It’s your body begging for support.
The Real Triggers Behind Constipation
So what’s behind all this? Let’s break it down.
Dehydration
You can’t move waste if your body doesn’t have water. I once had an 80-year-old client with migraines and constipation. Turns out, she only drank orange juice! After adding just 2 quarts of water a day, she came back a month later: no headaches, no constipation. Water matters more than we think.
Lack of Fiber
Whole wheat bread isn’t enough. You need real, vegetable fiber from foods like broccoli, spinach, sweet potatoes, and cabbage. Fruits help too, just keep sugar in check and eat them after your proteins and fats for better digestion.
Processed Foods & Sugar
These strip out natural fiber and overload your system. Sugary drinks feed yeast overgrowth, tax your liver, and can shut down proper bile production.
Low Magnesium
Wondering what deficiency causes constipation? Magnesium is one of the most common. Sugar, stress, and caffeine burn through it fast. Deep leafy greens and mineral-rich salts like Real Salt can help, but many people benefit from a supplement to restore balance.
Gut Imbalances
An overgrowth of yeast or a lack of probiotics can throw everything off. That imbalance leads to more toxicity, slower digestion, and more inflammation.
Rare but Real: Structural Issues
In rare cases, someone may be born with extra bowel length, causing kinks and twists. Imaging can confirm this but it’s not the case for most people. Usually, the issue is functional, not structural.
So, What Can You Do?
Most people only need one or two small lifestyle changes to see big improvement. That’s why I created my Constipation Protocol, to help you figure out exactly what your body needs to restore healthy movement and feel better fast.
